Conferences were so discouraging.

I took on the music department at my church with zero training.

Our music director had left, taken all the music and most of the musicians with him, and I had to pick up the pieces. I immediately thought I should attend music conference to get the training I needed to be a music director.

Conference was a lot of fun but I remember coming home simultaneously pumped up and disheartened. I would get a TON of ideas but no practical ways to implement them at my own church.

Bible colleges and big churches have a full band and all we had was a keyboard, bass and drums. Some services all we had was me on the piano. What good was it for me to learn how to lead or have music for a full band if my church didn’t have all of those things?

Sure, I went home excited but that wasn’t tangible. I needed to know how to make my church’s 3-piece band sound good. I needed to know how to lead a choir practice, how to teach parts, how to be a better musician, but all I got was a little encouragement and a book of new songs that my church band didn’t know how to play. That I didn’t know how to play, let alone teach.

If all you have is a smart phone then I’m going to teach you how to create content on a smart phone. If you have a DSLR camera, you’ll learn on that. And so on.
